COSCO is a commercialshipping company owned by China. The proposed expansion of COSCOs facilities atthe Port of Long Beach has raised issues concerning smuggling of guns by Chinesedefense-related companies, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, intelligencecollection, and access to U.S. and Panamanian ports. In response, senior Administrationofficials have written that COSCOs use of a terminal to be built on former Navalproperty would not adversely affect national security.
