Globalization isthe popular term given to this ongoing process. Concurrent with this rising level of tradehas been a significant slowdown in the pace of U.S. real wage growth and a substantialincrease in wage inequality between skilled and less-skilled workers. Are the trade andwage trends linked? This report suggests that there is likely little causality running froma rising level of trade to poor domestic wage performance. Slow average wage growthis fully and credibly linked to poor productivity growth. A small share of rising wageinequality can be linked to trade, but the great bulk of this trend is probably more soundlyrooted in a rising relative demand for skill, growing out of a changed pattern oftechnological change.
