BeardenEnvironmental Information AnalystResources, Science, and Industry DivisionSummaryThe National Environmental Education Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-619) established aprogram within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase publicunderstanding of the environment. The program awards grants for developingenvironmental curricula and training teachers, supports fellowships to encourage thepursuit of environmental professions, selects individuals for environmental awards, andsponsors workshops and conferences. While funding authorization expired in FY1996,Congress has continued to appropriate funding so far without enacting reauthorizinglegislation. However, the Administration is proposing a major shift in policy for FY2003,which would transfer the functions of EPAs Environmental Education Program to theNational Science Foundation (NSF).
