Longtime opposition leaderMwai Kibaki was elected president with 62% of the vote, while Kenyatta received31.3%. In the parliamentary elections, the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), anopposition coalition, won 125 of the 210 seats, while KANU managed to secure 64seats. The elections were considered free and fair by local and international electionobservers.
