From FY2001 through FY2008, appropriations for global health rose from less than $2 billion to almost $8 billion. The funding increases largely supported two U.S. programs aimed at fighting HIV/AIDS and malaria worldwide: the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Presidents Malaria Initiative, both launched during the George W. Bush Administration. During the Obama Administration, appropriations leveled off and averaged roughly $9 billion annually.
