He reportedly was wounded in a visit to the frontline where his troops were defending against a Chadian rebel advance launched from neighboring Libya. An army spokesman gave notice of Dbys death on state television, announcing the dissolution of the government and the National Assembly and the formation of a military council led by Dbys son, General Mahamat Idriss Dby Itno, aka Mahamat Kaka.
