(W)ARCHIVES:WITH ALLENBYAT GAZAMARK STOUTAUGUST 22,2014SPECIAL SERIES-(W)ARCHIVESAs everyone who has seenLawrence of Arabiaknows,British General Edmund Allenby led Britains EgyptianExpeditionary Force(EEF)during the latter part of World War I and campaigned successfully in Palestine against theOttoman Army.An important part of Allenbys work was the capture of Gaza in November 1917 and the breaking ofthe Gaza-Beersheba line.Accompanying Allenby was U.S.Army officer Colonel Edward Davis whose photo album fromPalestine is available online thanks to Fort Leavenworths Combined Arms Research Library(Part 1,Part 2,Part 3).Davis photographs are a remarkable glimpse into a pivotal period of modern military and political history.They bringinto relief some of the similarities of war across the last century and highlight some of the differences.Allenbys predecessor General Archibald Murray had made two costly and unsuccessful attempts against the town ofGaza,on March 26 and April 17-19.Allenby replaced Murray in June 1917 and soon started receiving reinforcementsin preparation for a renewed offensive.In the meantime,the Turks had been busily fortifying Gaza since Murrays firstassault.On Octobe
